John A. Coleman

84, of Narragansett and Boca Raton, FL, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cumberland, he was a son of the late John D. and Sarah (Austin) Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a financial and sales executive for H&H Screw Products and G Tanury Plating Company for many years until his retirement. John cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid horse racing and New England sports fan.

John was a Commissioner for the RI State Racing Association, during his commission, he attended eighteen Kentucky Derby races. He played an instrumental role in bringing Jai-Al to RI. John was the founding President of Cumberland-Lincoln Jaycees, chief fundraiser for the Cumberland-Lincoln Boys Club Expansion Project where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. John was the head of Southeast United Way fundraising and was a major fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Mr. Coleman was the Democratic Town Chairman in Cumberland and a delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention.  John was a coach for the Cumberland Little League, winning a title; also a coach for Babe Ruth and American Legion. He was an owner of numerous restaurants in Cumberland. John was a graduate of St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket and attended URI.

John is survived by his loving children, Debi Coleman of Portland, OR, Kevin Coleman of West Palm Beach, FL, Colleen Coleman Bauerle of North Kingstown, Daniel Coleman and his wife Linda of Cumberland, Erin Isselmann and her husband Jack of Portland, OR and the late John Patrick Coleman. He was the cherished grandfather of thirteen and great-grandfather of three; a brother of Joseph Coleman of CT, Michael Coleman of CT and the late Dennis Coleman and Anne Poluvatzick. John is also survived by his former wife Joan Coleman and his longtime companion Sarita Brady.

His funeral will be held on Friday, July 14th, at 9:45 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Road (Rt. 1A), Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, 864 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. Burial will be private. VISITING HOURS: Thursday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Spina Bifida Association, 1600 Wilson Blvd, Suite 800, Arlington, VA 22209 or Crotched Mountain Foundation Development Department, One Verney Drive, Greenfield, NH 03047.
