Hilda "Mama Grelle" Grelle

August 16, 1916 — August 14, 2017

Hilda "Mama Grelle" Grelle

101, of Old Oak Avenue in Cranston, went to heaven from her home peacefully on Monday, August 14, 2017, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was the beloved wife of the late John Grelle, Sr. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late John “Giovanni” and Filomena (Vittorio) Tiberio. Hilda worked downtown Providence at Kotler and Kopit Jewelry Company, then retiring from Pearl Uniform. Always working side by side with her beloved sister Jennie.

As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Hilda will always be remembered by her family for her love and total devotion. She was a selfless, hardworking, independent woman who exemplified the true meaning of mother. All of our lives are richer for having been touched by hers. Her love of cooking, baking and making holidays so special have become a family tradition. Her love of gardening, tending to her plants and flowers and walking 3 to 5 miles a day was her passion because she loved the outdoors. She also enjoyed sewing and knitting, and was known as the “Afghan Queen”, because all those close to her had at least one or two from babies to adults. She was known to make the best pizza around; you could smell the garlic and tomatoes in the neighborhood as she shared with all. We have all been blessed to have shared in her life and have a part of her in us. She will be truly missed, always loved, and never forgotten.

She is survived by her loving children, John Grelle, Jr. of Cranston, Roland Grelle of Cranston, Louise Bernier of North Scituate, and Rosemary Grelle-Walsh of Cranston. She was the cherished grandmother of 8 and great-grandmother of 10. She was the sister of Giovannina “Jennie” Parente and the late Philip Tiberio and their baby sister, Hilda Tiberio, whom she was named after. She was the auntie of many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, August 17th, at 10:00 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Cranston. Burial will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS: Thursday morning from 9:00-10:00 a.m.
