Sylvia L. (Pezzullo) Mattera

May 17, 1932 ~ September 8, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old


85, of Narragansett, RI, and Naples, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2017.  She was the beloved wife of Vincent D. Mattera for 63 years. Born in Providence on May 17, 1932, she was the eldest of three daughters of the late Sylvester and Lillian (Ricci) Pezzullo. 

Beginning in early childhood and through her adult life, Sylvia was curious, warm, kind, and adventurous. Those traits served her well in her roles as a daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. Sylvia’s endless energy, inner strength, deep faith, and moral compass were pivotal in raising her family and leading them through their life journeys. 

She was committed to the interests of the poor. Sylvia was a generous benefactor of the Maryknoll Sisters International Missions. She was a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea, Narragansett, RI, and St. Finbarr, Naples, FL. 

Besides her husband, Sylvia is survived by her sons Vincent D. Mattera, Jr., and his wife Paula of Orefield, PA, Stephen M. Mattera and his wife Victoria Beliveau of Jericho, VT, and Robert P. Mattera and his wife Jacqueline of Wakefield, RI; grandsons Andrew (Jessica), Daniel, Derrick, and Eric Mattera; and sisters Barbara Calenda of Pascoag, RI, and Janice Varone (Richard) of Cranston, RI. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family. She was predeceased by her parents. 

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory-SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Rd. (Rt.1A), Narragansett, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Point Judith Road, Narragansett, RI. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

The family is greatly appreciative of the wonderful staff at South County Hospital for all their efforts and care in Sylvia’s last days.
