Ernest “Ernie” Thomas O’Connell, 101, of Johnston, RI, passed away peacefully at Morgan Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, on November 14, 2023. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Anne (Montanaro) O’Connell. They were married for 73 years. Born in Cranston, he was the son of the late Theresa (Harper) O’Connell and Edward O’Connell. He is predeceased by four brothers, Norman, Edward, Donald and Arthur O’Connell. He leaves one brother, Francis O’Connell.
Besides his sibling, he is survived by his children, William O’Connell and his wife Karin of Barrington, RI, Kathleen Straus of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Richard O’Connell and his wife Wendy of Cranston, RI. He was the loving grandfather of Christopher O’Connell, Michael O’Connell, Haley Higgins, Matthew Craven, Nicolas O’Connell and Max O’Connell. He was the cherished great-grandfather of Molly, Sarah, Emily, Blair, Bryn, Jaxon, Oliver and Riley.
Ernie studied at RISD before being drafted into WWII. He dedicated a significant portion of his life in service to his country, retiring from the Army Map Service in 1975. His commitment and loyalty were not only evident in his professional life but also in the unwavering love and devotion he showed to his family.
Ernie was the beloved husband of the late Anne O'Connell, and together they shared a love that spanned decades. Anne and Ernie embarked on countless adventures, exploring the world hand in hand. Their travels created lasting memories and strengthened the bond that defined their beautiful partnership.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Ernie's greatest joy came from the close-knit circle of family that surrounded him. He poured love and wisdom into the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, leaving an indelible mark on each generation. Ernie will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and loving man whose presence brought comfort and joy to all who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023, at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 237 Garden Hills Dr, Cranston, RI 02920. A private burial will follow at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Family may call the morning of the Mass from 8:30 -9:30 am, at Nardolillo Funeral Home, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston, RI 02910.
