Alfred Armstrong

February 14, 1924 — April 5, 2024

Alfred Armstrong

100, of Narragansett passed away peacefully at his home on April 5, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Evelyn M. “Lyn” (Weber) Armstrong, the love of his life, with whom he was married to for 74 years before she passed away in November 2021. When asked what’s the secret to a long life, he would say, “A good wife.”

Born and raised in Cranston, RI, he was the son of the late Alfred and Edna E. (Liddle) Armstrong.

He was attending college at URI when he was drafted into the US Army, where he proudly served during WWII. He completed his education when he returned from the war, earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, going to work for Westinghouse, Jet Spray and eventually starting up his own company, Crathco, Inc. Crathco, Inc became a very successful drink dispenser company which he eventually sold in order to retire to Florida and Rhode Island.

He was very smart, inventive and hard-working, always keeping busy doing renovations, repairs, cabinet making, whatever needed to be done, even building his own house. If you needed help or advice he was always there. He took many risks in his life, lost 2 children, his wife and yet still persevered.

He leaves three children, Craig Armstrong of Dedham, MA, Jill Hynes of Narragansett, RI and Gail Cournoyer of Narragansett, RI; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Alfred Armstrong, III and Lee Armstrong; and was brother of the late Priscilla Armstrong Pearson.

His services will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the scholarship he set up in memory of his late daughter; Ms. Lee Armstrong ‘72 memorial scholarship at the University of Rhode Island.
