86, of Wakefield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. Al was born in Blackstone, MA, and was the son of the late Dr. James H. and Winifred E. (Stacy) McCooey of Blackstone. He was the beloved husband of Claire L. (Daignault) McCooey of Woonsocket for 59 years.

Al was a devoted and loving father to his four surviving sons: Alfred E. Jr. and his wife Marie of Cumberland, David and his wife Cathy of Westerly, Stephen and his wife Denise of Narragansett and William of Narragansett. He is also survived by 11 loving grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Al was the brother of the late John McCooey, the late Dr. James McCooey, the late Dr. Thomas McCooey, the late Mary McCooey (Erb) and his surviving sister Winifred Sullivan of Blackstone.

Al was a graduate of Mount St. Charles Academy, Boston College and was an alumnus of Brown University where he obtained his Master's Degree in mathematics. After serving 4 years with the United States Navy, Al began his teaching career as a high school math teacher at Woonsocket High School followed by many years as a college professor of mathematics at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA, retiring in 1990.

A Christian Burial service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Veronica Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett, RI. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Saint Francis Cemetery in Peace Dale, RI.

There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Blvd. Suite 3004, Warwick, R.I. 02886.
