52, of Westerly, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Stephanie (Lynes) Dowd. Born in Springfield, MA, he was a son of Eleanor (Hayes) Dowd of Waterford, CT, and the late Thomas Dowd. Dr. Dowd was Chief of Surgery at South County Hospital. A graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield and University of Massachusetts Amherst, he received his MD from Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, Chicago. Dr. Dowd completed his internship and residency from Brown University Medical School Integrative Program in Surgery. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the New England Surgical Society. In his spare time, he was an accomplished watercolorist and loved to cook. However, his true love was spending time with his wife and children.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving children, John ("Jack"), Caroline and Julia Dowd; he was also the brother of Matthew Dowd of South Hadley, MA, Mark Dowd of Raleigh, North Carolina, and John Dowd of South Hadley, MA as well their wives and children. He also leaves his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lynes of Pascoag and brother-in-law, John Lynes of Warwick and family; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins among many. Beyond the immediate family members, Andrew leaves behind his extended work family and beloved patients throughout the community.
His funeral will be held on Monday, at 9:30 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 1111 Boston Neck Road (Rte. 1A), Narragansett, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road, Kingston. Burial will take place in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
