94, of Cranston, Rhode Island and Pompano Beach, Florida, passed away on February 12, leaving behind a legacy of service, laughter, and a life exceptionally well lived.
Born the third of six children to the late Carlo and Antonetta Spirito, he grew up surrounded by family, friends, and a strong sense of community that shaped his 94 years. Known for his quick wit and generous heart, Carlo perfected two lifelong gifts: helping others and keeping everyone on their toes.
A true Renaissance man, Carlo proudly served his country and shared his musical talent as a drummer before settling into his calling as a math teacher and Department Chair at Western Hills Junior High. He taught generations of students not only equations, but standards — show up, work hard, and stand up for what you believe.
Beyond the classroom, he built and remodeled homes, installed pools, and — perhaps most memorably — served as the neighborhood barber. In the 1970s, when long hair was in fashion, he delighted in giving free crew cuts to the boys of Oakhill Terrace, whether they (or their parents) approved or not.
Civic duty came naturally to him. He served five terms on the Cranston City Council, rising to Council President, always advocating for what he believed would strengthen his city. Conversations with Carlo were rarely dull; those who disagreed with him might find themselves affectionately labeled a “chooch.”
Poppy enjoyed giving others a hard time and often orchestrated good-natured pranks that ended with his signature silent laugh — shoulders bouncing, eyes sparkling. An avid card player, he occasionally seated opponents with their backs to a mirror for what he considered “added perspective.” We trust that in heaven, no one is counting his cards.
Above all, Carlo loved his family fiercely and his city completely. He lived on his own terms, happiest amid conversation, community, and a little mischief.
A charter member of the Saint Mary Feast Society, Carlo proudly carried the Saint in the annual Madonna Della Civita procession until age 86. His faith, like his opinions, was steady and unwavering. He also cherished time on the fairways at Alpine Country Club, Pompano Municipal Golf Course, and Cranston Country Club.
He was predeceased by siblings Walter, Edwin, Florence (Marshall), Arlene (Stiles), and Josephine (McLendon). He is survived by his wife, Florence; his sons, Steven Spirito (Nancy) and Michael Spirito; his adored granddaughter, Anya Spirito; and many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
Services will be held Friday, February 20. Visitation 8:00–10:00 a.m. at the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1525 Cranston Street. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, 73 Church Street.
