(83y/o), died peacefully in her New York apartment on the morning of June 19, 2026. She formerly lived in Boynton Beach, Florida. She was born on January 27, 1943, in Providence, RI, grew up in West Warwick, RI and was a graduate of Classical High School.
Carol was predeceased by her parents: Robert Marcel Smith, Sr. & Berthe Rita (Betty) (Laboissonniere) Smith of West Warwick, RI.
She is survived by her two brothers: Robert Marcel Smith, Jr. & his wife Janice M. (DiRienzo) Smith of Narragansett, RI; Philip Allen Smith of Tacoma, WA; her loving niece, Laurie A. SmithMowry of Narragansett, RI; her two nephews Robert P. Smith, deceased, and Dr. Andrew J. Smith of Jamestown, RI; her two great nephews: Bradley S. Smith & wife Courtney of Lowell, MA; a great-great nephews: Quinn Smith & a great-great niece: Sydney Smith; and Kyle P. Smith & wife Riley of Concord, NH.
Carol was predeceased by her husband, Broadway veteran, Steve Elmore of Boynton Beach, Florida. She has several step-children.
Carol, whose stage name was Marcell, had an extensive career as a professional performer, as well as a decades-long career as a voice teacher. In both areas of her work, she had crossed the traditional lines of musical styles, moving fluidly between the worlds of opera, classical concertizing and musical theatre area. Carol earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Marymount College and Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music. She taught voice at Marymount College, Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, and was a member of the voice faculty of the University of Miami’s Department of Theatre Arts. Additionally, she also taught musical theatre classes as the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC for several consecutive summers and Master Classes at Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake, NY.
Carol performed on opera, concert, and musical theatre stages around the US and Europe while also maintaining a private voice studio in NYC for decades, teaching professional singers, actors, and dancers from every musical and theatrical discipline. In addition to her university instruction, she had an active private studio in South Florida. Carol’s performing and teaching backgrounds have offered her the opportunity to author for other teachers, as well as voice students of all levels: Uncovering Your True Voice: A Practical Guide for Singers and Teachers.
