83, of Cranston passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Cedar Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cranston.
He was survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Johanna, and his 2 sons, Paul Gibbons and his longtime companion Danielle Ferraro, Stephen Gibbons and his wife Tracey, both of Cranston; his grandchildren Katie and Jeffrey; his great-granddaughter Lily. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Muriel and John Gibbons, and brother to Marjorie Hickman of Glenview, Illinois as well as the late John and Robert Gibbons.
He was a retired Providence Police Detective and veteran of the Korean War, honorably serving 4 years and numerous tours of duty with the Naval Amphibious Forces, including operations with the Underwater Demolition Teams attached to the USS ARNEB. During the span of his 20 year career as a member of the Providence Police Department, he received over 15 departmental commendations, including the Rhea Archambault Award for Outstanding Policeman of the Year, as appointed by his fellow officers. During the final year of his law enforcement career, he was awarded the Policeman of the Year award for his dedicated and tireless investigative work.
Upon retirement from the police department, he was employed by the State Attorney General's Office where he served as Chief Investigator for 10 years under Julius Michaelson and Dennis Roberts. He continued his career with Blue Cross Blue Shield, as the Senior Investigative Fraud Coordinator until his retirement in 1994.
He was a devoted family man and active communicant of St. Joseph's Church in West Warwick, as well as being an active member of the Providence Police Association, Retired Providence Police and Firemen's Association, Providence F.O.P., and the East Greenwich Firemen and Veterans Club.
Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Monday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, West Warwick. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
