Douglas “Doug” Sherman, passed away peacefully on February 19, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and quiet strength. Born in Providence in 1942, he was son of the late Everett and Ida (Hendrick) Sherman.
Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol (McNaughton) Sherman, with whom he shared a deep and enduring partnership. Their life together began when they were teenagers and was marked by devotion, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to family. Carol’s memory remained a guiding light for Doug over the past few years, and those who knew him understood how profoundly he cherished her. He was also predeceased by his siblings Donald (Donna), Lois and David (Jean) Sherman.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Doug served his country with honor before beginning a distinguished 35‑year career at Electric Boat, where he was known for his dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic. His commitment to excellence and his quiet professionalism earned the respect of colleagues throughout his decades of service.
He was the proud father of four children: Doug (Judy) of Cranston, David (Sheri) of West Kingston, Dennis (Jane) of Coventry, and Dyan Barker (Craig Watkins) of South Kingstown. Doug’s love for his family was unwavering, and he took great joy in watching his children build lives rooted in the same values he held dear.
One of the greatest joys of his life was spending time with ten grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and happiness. Whether gathered for holidays, cheering at games, or simply enjoying time together, Doug cherished every moment with them. His passion, humor, and encouragement created memories they will carry with them always.
A lifelong New England sports fan, Doug especially loved cheering on the Boston Bruins. Whether watching a big game or talking about hockey memories with family, he brought the same enthusiasm and loyalty to his teams that he brought to every part of his life.
Known for his quick, but sometimes corny wit, he made others laugh and enjoy spending time in his company. Doug built a life defined by dedication—to the people he loved, the work he believed in, and the values he carried with him every day. He was someone others relied on, always willing to offer a helping hand.
Doug’s sense of humor, love of good conversation, and gift for meaningful connection will be remembered by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know and love him.
His funeral service and burial will be private.
