94, of Johnston, RI, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Peter Saccoccio, with whom she shared 67 years of marriage. Born on March 27, 1932 to the late Ortensio and Cecilia (Morgera) Schiano, she carried forward a legacy of family devotion, hospitality, and strength.
Esther was full of energy and embraced her role as matriarch, following in the footsteps of her mother, Cecilia. Like her mother, she was a gracious host. Family and friends raved about her cooking. Holidays at Esther’s home were cherished family occasions with abundant feasts. Her home was her palace and she took pride in every detail: crystal, china, and other fineries she lovingly displayed.
Esther’s longevity was consistent with the Italian wisdom that a close-knit community supports long and happy lives. Her fiery spirit and family bonds carried her through nearly a century. She was devoted to supporting her siblings and community, and was happiest when spending time with those she loved. If she knew family would be visiting, she’d whip up a batch of Italian biscuits.
In addition to cooking, she enjoyed listening to music (especially Sinatra), traveling, and hosting others. Esther had a deep love of nature, especially flowering plants, which her family often gave her on birthdays and Mother’s Days. She especially treasured memories made by the sea at her family home in Pt Judith, RI, where she spent many wonderful summers watching the “diamonds on the water.”
She was a sister of the late Vincent Schiano, Rose Schiano, Gilda Santilli, Anna Fiore, Helen Schiano, and Corrine Zainyeh. She is survived by her four children and spouses, Peter Saccoccio and his partner Joan Bruno, Jeannette Criscione and her husband James, Linda Saccoccio and her husband Barry Winick and Dona Capraro and her husband Richard. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and one Great grandchild.
Esther’s generous spirit and thoughtful nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 16that 11:00 a.m. in St. Rocco’s Church, Johnston. Burial will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.
