Gary V. Mazzie

69, of Cranston passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer on October 1, 2015. He was born on June 20, 1946 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, the eldest child of Sam and Mary (Fetchero) Mazzie. He was the cherished husband, soulmate, and best friend of Leona (Lee) Mazzie.
He leaves his beloved daughters, Kira Mazzie of Watertown, MA, Rebecca Ansaldi and her husband, Richard, of Narragansett, and Samantha Panice and her husband, Samuel, of North Providence, as well as his stepsons, Gary Case and his wife Donna, and Richard Case and his wife Deborah. He is also survived by his cherished sister, Anne Bozzi, and her husband Edward. Gary delighted in the exploits of his grandchildren: David Case, Zachery Mazzie-Smith, Braden Ansaldi, and Cooper Ansaldi.
Gary was a highly respected teacher of Biology and the Sciences for Johnston, RI and Attleboro, MA for 37 years. He was a golf and basketball Coach and also Athletic Director in Johnston.
Gary enjoyed many hobbies over the course of his life including Barbershop A Capella with Narragansett Bay Chorus, and serving as a volunteer EMT/Fire Fighter for the Tiogue Fire District. Gary was a reader for InSight (for the visually impaired and blind.) He also served his country in the Army Reserve for 30 years, attaining a commissioned rank of CW3.
Gary was proud to have established the JHS Athletic Hall of Fame. In the five years since its inception, the Hall of Fame has honored over 200 athletes.
All who knew him respected his many talents - he was a "Renaissance Man", knowledgeable in many different fields and activities, yet a compassionate, thoughtful man. His greatest joy was traveling the world. He shared his passion with his wife, and also shared it with the world on his travel blog, Gary's Travels (garystravels.com). Some of his greatest accomplishments were traveling to all 50 states and also 50 foreign countries. His bright smile and hearty laugh will be remembered by all who knew him.
Calling Hours will be Sunday, October 4, 2015 at NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, RI from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Funeral from the funeral home on Monday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 237 Garden Hills Drive, Cranston, RI followed by Burial with Military Honors in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
In lieu of flowers, Gary's constant thirst for knowledge compelled him to request donations to either Wikipedia or PBS.
