Georgina M. (Gow) Sweeney

October 4, 1941 — August 18, 2022

Georgina M. (Gow) Sweeney

80, of Cranston, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at HopeHealth Hospice Center, Providence. Born and raised in Elmhurst, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Georgina Gow and the sister of the late William Gow. She was the beloved wife of the late George E. Sweeney, Sr.

George and Georgina raised their two children on the shores of Bayville, Long Island before relocating to New Hampshire. After raising her children, Georgina began working as a substitute part-time driver for the United States Postal Service. From that position, she worked her way through many levels of advancement, ultimately becoming Postmaster, where she quickly became admired for a leadership style centered on quality and fairness. She went on to work for the United States Postal Service for over 23 years, during which time she received commendation as the 2000 N.H. NAPUS Postmaster of the Year and the President of the New Hampshire Postmaster Society. After her retirement, she and her husband selflessly left their home of over 30 years to move to Rhode Island where they would take an integral role in the raising of their four grandchildren.

Family was everything to Georgina. Both she and George were incredibly giving caretakers to their parents. Moreover, in their over 40 years together, they incorporated family into the travel they enjoyed so much. They especially loved their annual getaways with Uncle Bill in Vegas where Georgina was known to have lady luck on the dollar slots while George was doubling down on the nickel poker. As the grandchildren arrived, casinos gave way to Storyland and Disney World adventures.

After her beloved George was taken so suddenly, Georgina became active in numerous church committees and local networks, building a treasured community and becoming a role model and trusted advisor to friends of all ages. Georgina loved her home in Rhode Island mostly because of the warm and welcoming neighbors who grew to become her special Rhode Island family.

Georgina was an avid reader, a joy she has passed along to her daughter and granddaughter. An incredible baker, Georgina was well known for her cream cheese frosted carrot cake like no other. She took great delight in creating holiday traditions, including annual cookie decorating and the always highly anticipated scavenger hunt for gifts on Christmas morning. Beyond all the people who loved her, Georgina was infinitely adored by her furbabies, Gracie and Maebelle, who were forever faithfully at her side, and looked forward to mealtimes with Nana for the crumbs that were sure to fall at her feet. Georgina is most lovingly remembered for her generosity, kindness, and her capacity for unconditional love.

Georgina is survived by her loving children, Colleen S. McGloin (Paul) of Warwick and George E. Sweeney (Lynn) of Cranston and cherished grandchildren, Logan, Ellia, Brady and Eve.
