Ida (Aloia) Florio

Born on Palm Sunday, April 6, 1930, she was the widow of Ronald A. Florio who was 48 when he died in January 1979.  She was married 11 weeks to Theodore Shamie when he died in February 1988.  Born in Providence she was the daughter of the late Gennaro and Gennarina (Fiorellino) Aloia.

She was the mother of Peter R. Florio and his wife Denise of Cranston and Ronna L. Florio; sister of Lena E. Cosentino (John) of Smithfield, Eleanor O. Aloia of Cranston and the late Eva M. Lupo (Albert); grandmother of Alexis M. Florio of Cranston; aunt of 5 nephews and 3 nieces, great aunt of 4 nephews and 7 nieces; godmother of Marilyn Hartman of California, Anthony Natalia of California, Frank Iacobbo of Warwick, Ronald Iacobbo of Providence, Robert Lupo of Smithfield, Kathy Cosentino of Providence, Daniel, Angelique and Taryn Ham of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Kris Hutchins of Maitland, FL and Athena Walker of Port St. Lucie, FL.

Ida graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School June 1947.  She studied design at The Fashion Institute of NYC, graduating 1949, and studied Interior design at RISD/CE graduating 1982.

She lived in Boynton Beach, FL for 22 years.  She was a Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan at St. Thomas More Church for 16 years.  She sewed costumes for parish variety show’s for 19 years as well as Eucharistic Minister robes and symbolic baptismal garments for newborns.  She was a cosmetics sales woman for Gladding’s until 1953 for Peerless in Pawtucket up to 1958 and then Peerless in Providence from 1976-1982.

While in Florida she worked for Jordan Marsh and was a decorator for custom window treatments at J.C. Penny for 7 years.  She was a lobby attendant at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel for 9 years, returning to Rhode Island in 2004.

Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Friday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Apostles Church, Cranston.  Burial will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.  VISITING HOURS are Thursday 4 – 7 p.m.
