James J. Richardson, 86, of Providence, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 17, 2025, with his family by his side. Born in Riverside, RI, he was the son of the late William E. and Madeline (Donahue) Richardson. He was the beloved husband of the late Irene C. (McDonnell) for 58 years. James was a Heavy Equipment Operator for the State of Rhode Island at Rhode Island College for 43 years until his retirement.
He was a kind, funny, and gentle man whose presence brought light and laughter to everyone who knew him. He had a heart of gold that was big enough to hold everyone he loved. He always made people feel like they were the most important person in the room. James was devoted to his family. He shared an unshakable bond with his beloved wife, Irene. She was the love of his life, his best friend, and his constant companion. He loved his daughters and grandchildren fiercely.
He enjoyed making people laugh, often without even trying. His sense of humor, his warmth, and his easygoing nature drew people in. He loved spending the holidays with his family, sharing meals, or watching his favorite shows. Some of his favorite mornings were spent at his “go-to” breakfast spot, Homefries or going to the Cranston Adult Day Center.
He was the beloved father of Sheri A. Della Grotta and her partner Timothy Wolfe of Cranston, Sandra M. Smith of Johnston, and the late Susan M. Richardson and her surviving husband David Romano of Voluntown, CT. He was the father-in-law of the late Mario Della Grotta and Paul E. Smith, III. He was the cherished grandfather of Kaleigh N. Della Grotta, Nadia L. Della Grotta, Madison R. Dewey, Justin M. Dewey, Nathaniel E. Smith, and Brendan M. Smith. He was the brother of William E. Richardson Jr., his twin sister Joan Richards, Edward Richardson, and Jane Gilchrist. He was the brother-in-law of Jeannette T. Hall.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his wonderful caretakers: Sylvienne, Kathleen, Ana, and Rosie, who spent countless hours caring for him as if he was a member of their own family. Thank you to the Hospice Staff at the VNA of Care New England; the dear staff & friends at Homefries; and the dedicated staff at the Cranston Adult Day Services.
His funeral will leave at 9:00 am on Monday, October 27, 2025, from the NARDILILLOFUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Avenue, Johnston. Burial will take place at St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
