76, of Providence, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Peter Libbey for 44 years. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Bessie (Cardillo) Abbatamarco.
A medical laboratory technician of long and distinguished service, Janet trained at Rhode Island Junior College. She spent 17 years in the Chemistry and Immunopathology laboratories at Roger Williams Medical Center, then continued her career in the Hematopathology Laboratories at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, both in Boston. She later worked in the dermatopathology laboratory at Hines Dermatology Associates in Attleboro before returning to Roger Williams Medical Center in the Dermatology Laboratory. Specializing in immunohistochemistry, she contributed to and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in medical journals before her retirement.
Janet loved to travel. She visited Bermuda many times and other Caribbean Islands, and with her husband Peter made many journeys to Paris, southern France, and elsewhere in Europe. An accomplished gourmet cook, she delighted in gathering family and friends around her table. A devoted cat mother and a lover of all cats, she kept a large following on Instagram devoted to her two Siamese cats, Faith and Tenn.
Besides her husband, she is survived by his children, Ben Libbey and his wife Amanda, and their children Braelyn, Bennett, and Bo Libbey; and Greta Libbey and her children, Jayne and Lennon Miller. She was the sister of Anthony Abbatamarco and the late Joe Butmarc. She was the sister-in-law of Dottie Butmarc and her daughter Ann DiFlippo and Ann’s three children Jessica, Jaqueline, and Alex, and of Dennis and Audrey Sisti and their daughters, Tessa and Shana.
