a beloved member of her family, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, at Greenwood Center. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 18, 1934. In 1966, along with her husband, Alfred, Joan moved to Warwick to the home they built where they would raise their family.
Joan dedicated her life to caring for others.
In early years Joan worked with Venice Hall catering and worked part time as a bookkeeper for a local garden shop. She wanted to be home while her children were young. Joan would later enroll in Our Lady of Fatima Hospital’s last class for Licensed Practical Nursing, a proud graduate earning her degree in 1977. She went on to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Providence before continuing her career at West Shore Health Center. Throughout her professional journey, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to nursing and the well-being of her patients.
Joan’s strong faith greatly influenced her life. She was a devout communicant of St. Benedict Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and lector. Additionally, she taught CCD and led adult bible studies, inspiring many within her parish with her dedication to her faith and community. In her personal life, Joan cherished her family above all. She found joy in cooking and baking for her loved ones, particularly during the holidays. She loved to watch her children make music. She enjoyed singing to all her favorite songs. Joan was also actively engaged in her interests, enjoying her time at the Pilgrim Senior Center and St. Elizabeth Adult Day Memory Care Center. She had many fond memories square dancing with her husband, Alfred as members of the Friendly Mixers Square Dancers.
Joan is survived by her son, Donald A. Lurgio and his wife Mary; her daughter, Joanne M. Lurgio; her sister, Ursula "Honey" Zarrella and her husband Tim; her grandson, Joseph Lurgio and his wife Ashlee-Jean; her granddaughters, Chase Lurgio and Aidan Lurgio; her great-grandchildren, Rowan, Foster, and Carter; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Our sincere gratitude and thanks to all the staff at Greenwood Center. Everyone who cared for Joan, all those who stopped by to visit with Joan always showed great love, care, and respect supporting Joan in every way.
