John “Trigger” Abatiello Sr., dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend passed away on Wednesday, May 27th surrounded by his loving family who remained by his side until the end. Born on December 1, 1961, in Providence RI, he was the son of the late Lewis Abatiello and Marilyn (Fraser) Abatiello.
John was a graduate of Cranston High School West and dedicated his life to serving and protecting his country, his community, and the people he loved. An active and respected member of the Providence Police Department for 32 years, John devoted his life to the safety and well-being of the city he so proudly served. In recognition of his courage and commitment, he was honored as “Top Cop” in 2009 and represented the state of Rhode Island in Washington, D.C.
John was also a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, fought for his country during Gulf War and Desert Storm, including protecting the U.S. Embassy overseas. He earned distinction as a sniper/sharpshooter and furthered his specialized training by attending bomb training school in New Mexico. He also served as a paratrooper in the United States Army. In addition to his military and police service, John served as a United States Marshals Service Marshal and was a proud member of the Freemasonry.
John’s life was defined by honor, courage, loyalty, and unwavering service to others.
John was a loyal member of the St. Mary’s Feast Society and the Santa Maria Di Prata Society. John participated in bowling and dart leagues for many years. He was also a member of the Smithfield Sportsman Gun Club.
Above all else, John was a devoted family man. He cherished the traditions he created with his children and grandchildren and took great pride in his friendships.
He was the devoted father of Shayna (Abatiello) Graziano and her husband Brant Handy, and John Abatiello Jr. and his partner Alexis. He was the proud grandfather of Christopher, Mariah, Abriella and Hudson and was also the father-in-law of Michael Graziano Jr.
John was the loyal brother to Anthony Abatiello, David Abatiello, Donna Dragon, Lawrence Abatiello, Patricia Paolantonio, Laurie Gehner, Lisa Abatiello and the late Elizabeth Hood.
He also leaves behind his cousin, John Bettencourt, who was like a brother to him and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd at 9:45 a.m. from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Rocco’s Church, Johnston. Burial with Military Honors will take place in R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. VISITING HOURS will be held Monday, June 1st from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.
