John Buontempo

86, of East Greenwich, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Bayview Rehabilitation at Scalabrini. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Giovanni and Clara (DeBartolomeo) Buontempo.

John is survived by his loving children, Todd M. Buontempo (Sandra), Scott R. Buontempo (Susan), Christopher J. Buontempo (Kristina), Gina M. Todesca (Paul), and John G. Buontempo; cherished grandchildren, Andrew Buontempo, Nicolas Buontempo, Christopher Buontempo, Siena Buontempo, Paul Todesca, Gia Todesca, Luca Buontempo, Tony Todesca, and Ella Buontempo. He is also survived by his dear siblings, Ralph Buontempo, Rosemary Abbruzzese, Rudolph Buontempo, and Thomas Buontempo.

John grew up in the Eagle Park neighborhood of Providence. As a young man, he served in the Army National Guard before embarking on an extraordinary entrepreneurial career that spanned toolmaking, jewelry manufacturing, food service, and real estate.

He began as a self-employed toolmaker, then founded several jewelry manufacturing companies, and eventually led a public jewelry company. As a consummate visionary, John had an uncanny ability to see opportunity almost anywhere, and the optimism to make it happen. He also started the Bagel Factory, a coffee shop that continues today as Café Tempo under the stewardship of his brother, Thomas. Later in life, John turned his energy toward a variety of real estate projects.

John’s passions extended beyond business. He restored and collected classic cars, loved being near the water, and in later years developed a fondness for animals. He was well known for living in many homes - most of which he built himself - and some of his happiest days were spent on a jobsite, watching a house come to life.

Above all, John was a devoted family man. He cared deeply about providing for his loved ones and employed and supported many family members through his ventures. He valued his children and grandchildren more than anything else, and his happiest moments were when the whole family gathered together. His optimism and love made him the heart of those occasions, and during his last days, he spoke of returning home - to peace, and the love of his family.
