John Patrick Dougherty

John “Jack” Patrick Dougherty passed away on October 3rd, 2023.

John was born in Newton, Massachusetts; his family later moved to Falmouth, MA. He loved spending his youth and young adulthood in Falmouth. He graduated from Falmouth High School as president of his class.

He was the son of Joseph and Gertrude (Conner) Dougherty. He leaves behind his children: Kathleen of Los Angeles, Kara (Matt) Merry of West Tisbury, Massachusetts, Patrick of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and their mother, Joan McLaughlin Dunayer of Edgartown, Massachusetts. In addition, he leaves his brothers, Joseph of Los Angeles and William of Boston. Jack was also the brother of the late Gertrude(DeMello), Thomas, Paul and Kevin Dougherty. He was blessed with five grandchildren: Lucie Dougherty-Soares, Carly Dougherty, Josephine Merry and Jennifer and Anne Dougherty.

He was a dear friend of Joseph Neri of East Greenwich, RI and the O’Donnell Family of Wakefield, RI.

Jack embraced life’s joys and challenges with unwavering support for his family and friends. He had a natural ability to develop great and deep friendships that lasted a lifetime. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness and dedication.

Jack had an infectious smile that could light up a room. His ability to connect with people on a deep  level earned him the love and admiration of all who had the pleasure of sharing their lives with him. He embraced his Catholic faith.

He was a graduate of Georgetown University (B.A.), the University of Wiscousin (M.A.), and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (MBA).

Professionally, Jack was a successful banker, working at Chase Manhattan Bank (New York) and the Industrial National Bank. He later became president of Bank Hapoalim in Boston. Eventually, he left banking to become a professor of economics for 25 years at the Community College of Rhode Island. In his later years, he became a GED instructor for Tricounty Community Action Agency (Johnston, RI). This was the job that Jack absolutely loved; he became a mentor to countless young individuals who admired his guidance and unwavering support.

He was a past member of the Georgetown University Alumni Association, a member of the University Club, and a trustee and treasurer for the Rhode Island College Foundation.

Jack loved to cook; he truly enjoyed having family and friends for supper. He was a great history buff. He was also known to listen to the major television news stations for hours each day, often offering colorfully his opinion on something or someone.

Christmas was Jack’s favorite holiday. He decorated his house from “top to bottom”. He would remind friends on the 25th of each month about how many more months there were until Christmas.

The legacy Jack leaves behind is one that encourages us to embrace life with warmth and affection toward our loved ones. Let us remember him as a man who was dedicated to his family and friends, leaving a legacy on all those fortunate enough to have known him. In his honor, may we continue to live with the same compassion and zest for life that defined Jack’s journey on this earth.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jack’s Celebration of Life which will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Falmouth, Massachusetts on October 16th at 11am.
