John J. Gates

96, of Cranston, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 21, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Elaine R. (Previte) Gates. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John F. Gates and Mary (Hopkins) Gates.

John was a proud U.S. Marine Corps Veteran serving during the Korean War where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Medal along with the Korean Service Ribbon. He worked for many years as a Parking Manager for Meyers Parking and then Intown Parking. He also worked for over 30 years at Cranston City Hall and on the Racing Commission at Lincoln Greyhound Park for 15 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving children, John Gates and his wife Maryann, Robert Gates, Kenneth Gates, and Michael Gates; 13 cherished grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; dear brother of the late Rita Flynn; nephew Gregory Flynn.

VISITING HOURS will be held on Friday, March 27th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston.

His Funeral will be Saturday, March 28th at 8:45 a.m. from the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Rocco’s Church, Johnston. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
