82, of Cranston, passed away at home with his family by his side on January 4, 2016. He was the beloved husband of 42 years to Catherine (Cathy) (Healey) Moretta. Born in Providence, John was the loving and devoted son of the late Benny and Filomena (Meloccaro) Moretta. John was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, attended Bryant College and graduated from Johnston and Wales College. He was a Navy veteran. He was an agent for Garden City Builders, and subsequent to that started his own home building business under the name of John Moretta Builder, Inc. After building homes for many years, John became a member of the Carpenters' Local 94 until his retirement. John served on the City of Cranston Minimum Housing Board of Review. He was a faithful communicant of St. Mary Church, Cranston and was a member of the church's Holy Name Society. He was a member of the former Knightsville Library Association and a long-time member of the Cranston YMCA. He enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. In his earlier years, he played trumpet with the Colonial Marching Band. John deeply loved his family and was a constant guiding force to them.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two cherished children, daughter Phyllis DeMaio of Greenville and her husband, John; son John B. of Cranston and his wife Kelley (Struck) Moretta. He was the loving and proud Grampy of John (Jack), Elizabeth, and William Moretta, and Emily and Gavin DeMaio. John is also survived by his loving sisters Dorothy Moretta of Cranston and Leonora (Lee) (Moretta) Marandola of Cranston. He also leaves several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave. Cranston, on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church 1525 Cranston St. Cranston at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
