78, formerly of Narragansett and Smithfield, Rhode Island, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, February 1, 2026. John was born on January 8, 1948, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to the late John and Kathleen Winters.
A lifelong Rhode Islander, John built a life rooted in faith, family, and service to others. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Winters, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage marked by devotion, partnership, and love. John was a proud and devoted father to Andrew J. Winters and Cara Parr, and a cherished grandfather to Jack, Annie, Benjamin, Luca, and Matteo, who brought him endless joy and pride. John is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen M. Winters and Dorothy Fenner.
John dedicated much of his professional life to higher education, working at Bryant University from 1981 to 1991 and later at the College of the Holy Cross from 1991 until his retirement in 2012. He valued learning deeply, having graduated from St. Raphael Academy, Providence College, and The Catholic University of America.
A man of strong faith, John was a faithful attendant and Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas More Parish, where he found great meaning in serving his parish community. His quiet devotion, kindness, and steady presence touched many lives.
John will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, his love for his family, and his unwavering faith. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and integrity that will live on through all who knew him.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 11:30am in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland Street, Narragansett. VISITATION before the Mass from 10:00-11:30 AM in the church. Burial will be private.
