Joseph V. 'Joe' Mega, Sr

81, of Saunderstown, passed on Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Joe was the beloved husband of Antonette "Marlene" (Sartorio) Mega. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Anthony E. and Vincenza "Jennie" (Consolo) Mega. Mr. Mega was an Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War. Joe's career exhibited his diverse interests and varied skills. Early in his career, he was employed by Textron as an international systems analyst at the Bostich division implementing operation systems in Europe, Australia and throughout the United States. From 1974-1976, he served as the Director of Community Development for the City of Providence. In 1976, he became proprietor of Crugnale Bakery and ultimately developed one of the largest Italian bread and pizza distributors in Rhode Island. During this time he also served on the Board of Directors at First Bank and Trust Company. He had a brief retirement from 2008-2013 before becoming co-owner of Mega's Bakery at age 80. His life contributions also include tireless community work focused on youth programs. This includes being a recreational center director in Providence and President of the Mt. Pleasant Little League. Later in life, his advocacy centered around children with autism. He considered Ted Williams the greatest baseball player he had seen and Frank Sinatra the greatest musical artist. Besides his wife, Joe is survived by his three children; Anthony E. Mega, MD and his wife Mary Ellen of South Kingstown, Karen M. Mega, DMD and her husband Walter Fonfara, DMD of Saunderstown, and Joseph V. Mega, OD and his wife Victoria Helen Bishop of North Kingstown. He was the cherished grandfather of Andrew, Joseph, Michael and Mary. Joe was the brother of Concetta "Tina" DelVecchio, Amedeo "Joe" Mega, and Anna Costabile. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in The Saint Kateri Tekakwith Catholic Church, 84 Exeter Rd, Exeter, RI. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Entombment will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meeting Street School, 1000 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02905.
