90, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Greenville and Bristol, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, July 27, 2015. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Joseph and Eva (Ferri) Spirito and the beloved husband of the late Rose A. (D'Arrico) Spirito. Joseph was the brother of the late Filomena D. (Spirito) Finizia and her late husband Hugo Finizia.
Mr. Spirito was a Senior Staff Contracting Officer and Certified Contract Manager for the Department of Defense at the Electronic Systems Division of the United States Air Force, Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford, Massachusetts. During his career, Mr. Spirito was the recipient of numerous awards for his outstanding expertise in contract negotiations and eventually retired after more than 30 years of service. He was also a U.S. Government Contract Consultant for various defense contracting companies until his final retirement. Mr. Spirito was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during WWII in the South Pacific. Joseph's greatest source of joy was derived from spending time with his children and grandchildren. He reveled in each of their accomplishments and prided himself on their successes. He was an outstanding cook, he enjoyed nature, fishing, and in particular, people in general. He was known for giving advice and mentoring anyone in need as he was a wise and insightful man. He had a passion for telling his own life stories and did so with humor and enthusiasm. Joseph had a knack for the arts as well as the sciences. He loved to paint and draw, not only helping his children with their school projects in earlier years, but was also able to master the use of a computer at the age of 86. His ritual of monitoring the stock market became his favorite daily pastime in recent years. Joseph possessed a grand presence both in stature and personality, and was known for his generous nature, often contributing to many charitable organizations that he held near and dear to his heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Spirito is survived by his two daughters Claudia E. (Spirito) DePastina and her husband Edward T. Jr., of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Paula T. (Spirito) San Souci R.Ph., and her husband Alfred A., of Naples, Florida, his son, Joseph A. Spirito, Jr., M.D. and his wife Jill M., of North Smithfield, Rhode Island, and his three grandchildren, Jennifer R. Spirito, Joseph A. Spirito, III and Nicole J. Spirito of North Smithfield, Rhode Island. Mr. Spirito is also survived by a niece JoAnn (Finizia) Santie and her husband Frank Santie and a great-niece, Erika Santie. He also leaves his beloved Maltipoo, Lexi.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday July 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville R.I. VISITING HOURS are respectfully omitted. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston, R.I. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joseph A.
