On Sunday, October 19, 2014, Joseph W. Sherman, III, of West Greenwich, RI, passed away in the loving arms of his wife. He was the much-loved husband of Sandra Sherman and adoring father of Olivia Sherman. Joseph loved his daughter very much and was grateful to witness her high school graduation and starting college this fall.
Joe, Joe Beans, Joe Joe, was the son of the late Joseph W. Sherman Jr. and Inez (Mogatti) Sherman. He is also survived by two sisters; Gail Danilowicz of Foster, and Jane Murray of Narragansett. He was very close to his two cousins; David M. Colannino, M.D., of Providence, and Guido M Sarcione, of Cumberland. They referred to each other as brothers.
Joe attended Johnston High School and Bryant University. He also received a degree in graphic arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. He worked at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island for 27 years and was currently a valued and respected employee of Shoreline Business Solutions.
In April, 2014, Joe was diagnosed with mantel cell lymphoma. He and his loved ones knew he had a huge battle to fight, which included many visits with physicians and enduring numerous treatments and tests. The form of cancer Joseph had is, unfortunately, extremely rare and not responsive to known therapies. He faced his diagnosis with courage and determination. While living with this horrible disease, Joe still found ways to enjoy his life no matter how much pain he was in. He and his family always remained hopeful.
Up until the last few weeks of his life, Joe remained active by assuring enough wood was chopped for the coming winter; the many birds flocking to his yard were fed; his lawn was mowed; bushes were pruned and his garden well-tended. He also took over keeping the house clean, paying bills, doing the food shopping and cooking dinner. Always active, Joe was a doer. Until his illness, he was continuously looking for the next task or thinking of how to improve his surroundings. He always worked hard to provide a wonderful life for his family.
Joseph was devoted to nature and the outdoors. His gardens always flourished under his care. Skiing was also a passion and he shared many trips to New Hampshire with his family during the season. Boating both on Cape Cod and close to home was a part of his being. . But of all Josephs' interests Cape Cod would have to be on the top of his list. With his small skiff he would take Sandra, Liv and anyone else visiting to the most beautiful, pristine places that were difficult to get to on foot. He would get out of his 1978 green skiff and announce that, "This is my beach, and no one else better show up. "His father was from the area, so Joe always felt lucky to spend his summers there. He was always proud that he could trace his ancestry directly to the Mayflower, which further connected him to the Cape.
Joseph was a sharp and comical man. His knowledge spanned many subjects and he could talk about a variety of topics with depth and understanding.
Witty, intelligent, and handsome, Joseph was very well-liked. He had a good heart, kind nature, and friendly disposition. His qualities included strength, integrity, intelligence, sophistication, and unwavering dependability. Most of all, he was a loving husband and father, an amazing brother, cousin, nephew, uncle, and friend.
