Heaven gained a very special angel on November 6, 2026. While surrounded by her family, Joyce Shallcross passed on, leaving behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and devotion to family, children, and education. She shared 62 years of marriage with her beloved husband W. David Shallcross, a partnership that stood as a lasting source of love and strength.
Joyce earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Rhode Island College, preparing for a life of service that would touch many children. She was an elementary school and special education teacher with the Cranston School Department for many years before her retirement. Her commitment to students continued beyond the classroom, as she also served as a special education consultant in Woonsocket and as a tutor at Johnson & Wales University. Joyce loved children, her own, and the many children she taught over the years; and she brought grace, patience, care, and kindness to each role she held.
She was known for her kind and compassionate heart, always carrying a deep concern for others. An avid reader who loved the beach, Joyce also gave of herself to her community as a founding member and first Vice President of the Cranston Women’s Club; leader of Weight Watchers; and leader of the Ladies of Leisure Book Club.
Her faith was central to her life. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Conception Church, teacher in the religious education program, and very eloquent Lector.
Among all the blessings of her life, her faith and her family were her proudest accomplishments.
Besides her husband, she leaves her son, David; her daughter, Erin (husband David); her sister, Sandra; and her cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Gianna, and Jack. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Katherine; and her sister, Kathlene. She held her family closest in her heart and took great joy in each of them.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on November 11, 2026, at 10:00am at Immaculate Conception Church, 237 Garden Hills Drive, Cranston. Family and friends will be received in the church vestibule before the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joyce's memory to Immaculate Conception Church.
