passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by unwavering love, quiet generosity, and extraordinary strength.
Born and raised in Jamestown, she was deeply rooted in the home she cherished her entire life. The island was not just where she lived, it was who she was. Her presence there was constant, grounding, and full of warmth.
Layne was the embodiment of loyalty to her family and a true protector. She gave endlessly of her time, her energy, and her love, never expecting anything in return. While her devotion to her own family was boundless, her generosity extended far beyond it. She quietly touched the lives of countless people, many of whom we have never met.
She had a special gift for giving in ways others might overlook. Whether spending hours in consignment shops or searching through her barn for just the right item, Layne found joy in helping others in need. It is impossible to know how many lives she impacted through these quiet acts of kindness, but her influence is far-reaching and lasting.
Layne is now at peace, reunited with her beloved husband, Donald Clarke, her father, Michael Sylvia, whom she so adored, her mother, Mary, her brother, Michael, and all who have gone before her.
She is survived by her loving children, Erin Marsh, Whitney and Todd Marzano, and Don and Tracey Clarke, her brothers, David and Jerry Sylvia, her nine grandchildren, and her four great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored deeply and watched over with immense pride and love.
We love you, Mom.
There will be a Celebration of Life held this summer for those who wish to join. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a small donation to the Alzheimer’s Association of Rhode Island.
