Louis R. Furia, passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, son of the late Elizabeth (D’Arezzo) Furia and Luigi Furia. Louis lived a life marked by hard work, creativity, and a deep commitment to those he cherished. He raised his family in Johnston. He was the beloved husband of the late Linda (Schiano) Furia.
A proud high school graduate, Louis served honorably in the US Army Reserves before embarking on a long and steady career at Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals, where he worked for many years with dedication and pride. Beyond his work in the chemical industry, he found fulfillment in roles that allowed him to nurture his passion for gardening and woodworking—serving as a groundskeeper at Katherine Gibbs School. There, he cultivated not only plants but also a sense of peace and purpose.
Louis was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid gardener whose green thumb was evident in his vegetable garden. He found joy in saltwater fishing, drawing and woodworking, channeling his creativity into handiwork that enriched his home, his daughter’s homes and family life. Known for being handy around the house, Louis was always fixing or tinkering with something, demonstrating his resourcefulness and love for those he cared about. His kitchen was another place where his warmth shone brightly; he loved to cook and preserve vegetables from his garden.
A proud member of Smithfield Elks Lodge #2359, Louis enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship the lodge offered, relishing his time spent with longtime friends and new acquaintances alike. His daily routine always included reading the Providence Journal, and playing Powerball. He also looked forward with enthusiasm to every boxing match he could watch a pastime that brought enjoyment to his days.
Among Louis’s proudest accomplishments were the many hours spent babysitting his grandchildren. He treasured these moments deeply, finding happiness and fulfillment in nurturing the younger generation. He looked forward to having coffee and donuts with his grandson every Sunday morning.
Louis is survived by his daughters, Lynn Furia Austin (and her husband Ian Austin) and Karen Furia (and companion Brian Casey); his cherished grandchildren Dennis Austin, Lauren Scavitto, and Mia Scavitto; and his brother Richard Furia (and his partner Dale Shea). He is preceded in death by his son Louis K. Furia; and his brother Frank Furia (and his wife Angela) .
His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday May 1, 2026, at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Church, 645 Hartford Ave., Johnston. Followed by entombment in St. Ann Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held from 9:00 - 10:00 am at the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston.
