Mary C. (Dolan) Metro

Formerly of Cranston and Providence passed away on March 2, 2018, she was 94. She leaves behind her three children Corinne Vasi of West Sacramento, Paul Metro, Sr. of West Greenwich and Peter Metro of Warwick. She also leaves 6 grandchildren, one deceased and 5 great grandchildren, one deceased. She is predeceased by her husband Robert and her four brothers and three sisters.

Our dad died when we were kids and mom never had the luxury of enjoying her own home in all her years, we lived in tenement houses and we walked everywhere. Our neighborhood was a mixture of apartments and what were then called the projects, where we had a swing set and monkey bars that produced split lips and chipped teeth. We lived as if we were royalty, our mom was a magician.

Mom set the bar high for us. She taught us no matter what color or how poor our upstairs or downstairs neighbors were, we all lived in the same house. We went to school during the civil rights movement, witnessed bigotry, fixed broken windows and honored curfews. I look back and would not change a thing. We were just different ingredients in a stew called South Providence. My mom was the most considerate person I know.

Retired for 41 years from Verizon as an operator and then a fraud investigator, she loved her free time and was a regular fixture at the Cranston YMCA. She volunteered many years as a dispatcher for the Cranston Senior Center trans van. She also served on the board of the Cranston Housing Authority, and was a volunteer at the senior games for years. We will miss her.

Her funeral and burial were private.
