81, of Cranston, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by all of his loving family as he transitioned from this world to the next. Jim was a deeply devoted husband, father and grandfather who lived for his family and brought great joy to their lives. His absolute commitment and dedication to his family touched the hearts of all who knew him but none more than his beloved wife of 54 years, Marie E. (Capotosto) Vartanian and their two children, Colonel James M. Vartanian and his late wife Judith, and Maria E. Giannini and her husband Victor, all of Cranston. Jim was the deeply cherished grandfather of Kristiana, Michael, and Nicholas Giannini and James, Christopher, and Matthew Vartanian. Jim was the son of the late Dakes and Hripsime (Hahigian) Vartanian and the brother of the late Lucy Arakelian and Osky Cascone. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Jim was a Korean War Veteran and served in the 115th Military Police Company in the Rhode Island Army National Guard. Over the years Jim owned Arco Gas Station in East Greenwich and was co-owner of Dip' Z Creamery in Cranston. Jim finally retired last year after 38 years of employment at the U.S. Post Office. Jim was widely admired by his family and friends for having the kindest heart and greatest sense of humor.
Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston on Tuesday, July 15th at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, 1525 Cranston St., Cranston at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
