Richard P. Butler

Richard Butler (Retired PPD), 83 of Johnston, passed away peacefully on Friday December 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John F. and Mary E. (Belknap) Butler. The husband of Arlene (Meunier) Butler for the last 63 years, he reminded her daily that she was the love of his life.

Following high school Richard, alongside his brother Fred, enlisted in the US Army, proudly serving his country as a paratrooper during the Vietnam Era. After his discharge, he joined the Providence Police Department and served for 15 years. Richard also took pride in his second career with RIPTA.

His kindness, sense of humor, beautiful soul, and pride for his family often left many at a loss for words to describe him. He was the biggest cheerleader for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He coached his granddaughter’s softball team at Mt. Pleasant Little League for many years. An avid sports fan, he loved his New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He even played softball and racquetball into his adult years. Richard and his brother Fred had a special bond and were often mistaken for twins; they were always together, from serving their country serving in the Providence Police Department .

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Denise Muciaro, and son Stephen Butler; his beloved three granddaughters Jessica Butler, Amanda Muciaro, and Karissah Butler, and his great-grandchildren Ashley Butler, and Nicholas Cronan. He was the brother of Frederick “Fred” Butler, and the late John F. Butler, Jr., Barbara Mitchell and Patricia Bushee.

Family and Friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the NARDOLILLLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm, with a service beginning at 7:00 pm. Burial will be private.
