Richard P. Derensis

74, of Cranston, Rhode Island, passed away surrounded by the love of his family.

Richard was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Joan Costa, and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was the center of his world, and he was affectionately known as “Dad” and “Papa” not only by his family, but by so many who had the privilege of knowing him.

Richard was the proud father of Mario DeRensis and Lindsey Tanner, and was preceded in death by his son, Richard “Beanie” DeRensis, and his brother, Robert DeRensis. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Joseph DeRensis, Ariel DeRensis, and Lily Tanner; his great-grandchildren, Malcolm Genest, Marshall Genest, and Richie DeRensis; and his sister, Rosemarie McHugh, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

A proud Vietnam veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Richard dedicated more than 40 years of his working life as a diesel mechanic for the Rhode Island Air National Guard. After retiring from the Air National Guard, he continued doing what he loved, working as a diesel mechanic for the United States Postal Service. There was very little Richard couldn't fix when it came to an engine, and he had a gift for figuring things out and getting them running again.

Outside of work, Richard lived life with a passion for the things he loved. He was a devoted Harley-Davidson enthusiast, especially proud of his Softail Custom, which he lovingly transformed into a trike. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and spending his summers outdoors. He could often be found tinkering away in his garage, surrounded by projects, tools, and whatever he was working on next. Every year, he would attempt to grow vegetables, making the effort—and the stories that came with it—part of his yearly tradition.

Richard also loved to cook, especially when it came to the family's big Christmas Eve celebration. Bringing family together around good food and making memories was something that meant so much to him.

Those who knew Richard will remember his wonderful sense of humor, his loyalty, his generosity, and his ability to make everyone feel like family. He was the kind of man people could count on—the one who would show up, lend a hand, fix what was broken, and make you laugh along the way.

Richard was everyone's Dad and Papa. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to the people around him. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, traditions, and love that will continue through the generations.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Visiting hours will be held in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Monday, September 14, 2026 from 9:00 - 11:00 am. Burial will be private.
