Richard E. "Rick" Straughn, Sr.

passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 6, 1954, in Jamaica Plain, MA, Rick enjoyed a life filled with, dedication, and love for his family and community.

For over 30 years, Rick made significant contributions to the printing industry, working diligently at Bird & Son and Union Industries. His career also included a decade as a bus driver for children with special needs in the Exeter/West Greenwich School Department, a role he found deeply fulfilling and rewarding.

Rick was known for his immense love of music and his fervent support for Boston sports teams, including the Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, and Boston Celtics. His enthusiasm for sports brought joy to many, and he cultivated a spirit of camaraderie among fans.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Eileen A. (Byrne) Straughn, with whom he shared 45 wonderful years of marriage. Rick's legacy continues through his son, Richard E. Straughn, Jr. of West Greenwich, as well as his loving sister, Catherine Straughn Laursen of Lincoln. He is also remembered fondly by his mother-in-law, Marie D. Byrne of North Kingstown, and by his brothers-in-law, Robert W. Byrne, Jr. and his wife Monica of Falmouth, ME, and Michael P. Byrne and his wife Carol of North Kingstown. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Diane M. Cherella and her husband William of Narragansett. Rick took great pride in his extended family, which includes many cherished nieces and nephews: Joseph Byrne, Steven Laursen, Robert W. Byrne, III, Matthew Laursen, Kathryn Mulcahey, William Cherella, III, Robert M. Cherella, Kimberly DellAquila, Caroline Cherella, and Michael P. Byrne Jr. and Katherine Byrne.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Richard W. and Shirley (Archibald) Straughn, his sister, Susan L. Bryant, and his father-in-law, Robert W. Byrne, Sr.

In addition to his family, Rick leaves behind his beloved dogs, Bella and Bear, who undoubtedly felt the warmth of his companionship and love throughout his life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 10am in St. Francis de Sales Church, 381 School Street, North Kingstown. His burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Jimmy Fund, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or Pawfect Life, 195 Old Mill Road, Uxbridge, MA 02569.
