44, of Cranston, RI lost his courageous battle to cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday April 6, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born in Providence, RI the devout husband of Doreen (Stewart) Assanti, devoted and loving stepfather to Michael and Stephanie. Son of Richard Assanti and his wife Sandra (Lossini) of Cranston and Barbara (Mercurio) Petras and her husband Peter Petras of East Providence. Son-in-law of the late (Ret.) Col. Gerald C. Stewart and his wife Annette (Nardella) Stewart of Cranston. Brother of Rick Assanti and his wife Kate (Galvin) Assanti of Cranston and step brother to Laurene Lossini and Luis Lossini of Cranston. Brother-in-law of LTC. Richard M. Stewart of Charlestown and Susan (Stewart) Aceto and her husband Luigi of Cranston and uncle of six nieces and nephews.
Robert was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School Class of '88. He was a passionate carpenter and craftsman by trade for twenty years, the last three of which were spent with Atlantic Properties.
As a lifelong athlete his passion for sports began with his involvement in Elmhurst Little League at nine years old leading him to become captain of the varsity baseball and basketball teams at Mt. Pleasant High School. His unwavering devotion to youth athletics came full circle when he coached his niece Madi for the last six years in spring and fall girl's softball. He coached Apponaug Girls Softball for one year and CLCF for five years culminating in the Spring Rec Championship in 2013.
Rob will be deeply missed and will always be remembered as a lifelong Pittsburg Steelers fan who kept his family at the center of his life.
Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory 1278 Park Ave., Cranston on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Ave., Cranston. Burial will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. VISITING HOURS will be Friday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.
