53, of Cranston, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Tommy was born on January 8, 1972, in Cranston, RI. He was the son of Patricia (Flynn) Fitzgerald of Cranston, RI and the late Lt. Jay W. Fitzgerald Sr. (CPD).
He called the city of Cranston home for the entirety of his life. Tom was a 1990 graduate of Cranston High School West and a 2019 graduate of Roger Williams University, earning a degree in criminal justice. Tom spent most of his adult life working in the restaurant industry. He worked at Twin Oaks and Tavalo Restaurants for several years. He was the former co-owner of Fitzpatricks Pub in Cranston. Tom also served briefly as a member of the Cranston Police Department. Most recently, Tom worked as a substitute teacher in the Providence Public School Department. He is remembered fondly by those who have worked alongside him through the years. Tommy had a lifelong passion for all New England sports teams. He was a faithful fan, win or lose. His greatest love was reserved for the Boston Celtics. Through every season—championship runs and rebuilding years alike—Tommy cheered with unwavering loyalty. He shared that passion generously, bonding with family and friends over games and generations of legendary players. For him, being a fan was never just about the score—it was about pride, camaraderie, and the joy of belonging to something bigger. His green-and-white spirit will live on in the hearts of those who cheered beside him.
In addition to his mother, Tommy is survived by his beloved daughter, Veronica Coffey of Coventry, who was the love of his life and his favorite movie sidekick. He was a wonderful brother to Jay Fitzgerald, Jr. (Cara) and Michael Fitzgerald, both of Cranston, and Betsy Fitzgerald of Johnston. He was affectionately known as Uncle T by his nieces, Kaitlyn and Molly Fitzgerald, and his nephew Jay Spina, whom he adored. He also leaves behind his dear aunt, Janice Quinn, and many cousins whose company he truly enjoyed.
Tom was the family historian who loved to share his discoveries about the Fitzgerald and Flynn family histories with us all. His love, laughter, and stories will be remembered fondly and missed dearly.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston.
