Valerie D. (Janiak) Curley

Valerie D. (Janiak) Curley, born on October 27, 1957, in Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026, at the Heritage Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Smithfield, RI where she was surrounded by her family - “Team Val.” Valerie’s life was marked by deep dedication, accomplishment, and devotion to her family, her community, and her faith.

Valerie was the beloved daughter of the late Rev. John R. "Jack" Janiak and Rev. Elizabeth J. (Ianiero) Janiak, and cherished sister to her late brother, Steven Janiak. Growing up surrounded by a loving family, Valerie formed bonds that would last a lifetime and carried the values instilled in her by her parents throughout her years.

She pursued her education at CCRI, where she earned her Associate's degree, laying the foundation for a life of public service and personal achievement. Valerie proudly served for 22 years with the Johnston Police Department, where she broke barriers as the first woman Sergeant. Her tenure was one of dedication, compassion, and exemplified leadership, earning her the enduring respect and admiration of both her colleagues and the community she so faithfully served.

Valerie’s personal life was just as rich as her professional one. She was the devoted wife of the late Robert J. "Bobby" Curley, with whom she shared many years of love and partnership. Valerie is survived by her cherished daughter, Marissa F. Curley and her partner Matthew Beaune; her sister Bernadette Bessette and her husband Michael; her sister Caroline Janiak and her partner Heather.

To those closest to her, Valerie was a constant source of warmth and unwavering support. She delighted in life’s simple pleasures: shopping excursions, sharing meals at her favorite restaurants, lively games of cards, and her fondness for Law and Order. She was a lifelong dog lover, known for her immaculate home and her love of cleaning, qualities that reflected her care for those around her. Valerie’s faith was central to her life; she found strength, guidance, and joy in participating in her church community.

Valerie faced her final days with courage, surrounded by caring professionals. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Heritage Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and the staff of Harmony Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
