93, of Johnston, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Briarcliffe Manor in Johnston. He was born and raised in Johnston on his family's farm on Hartford Avenue the son of the late Angelo and Rosa (DiLullo) Acciardo. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in North Africa, Italy and the Philippines and was honorably discharged in 1945.
In January 1946, he was appointed as a probationary patrolman with the Johnston Police Department. During his police career he was promoted through every single rank, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain then Police Chief. During his police career with the rank of Lieutenant and Captain, he was in charge of investigation and prosecution, receiving several commendations for outstanding performance in arrest cases. After being appointed Chief, January 1965, he made investigations and conducted raids on 10 business establishments. He made numerous arrests for stolen property and various other violations.
Vincent also attended U.S. Army Military Police School, law enforcement officer's camp in Perry, Ohio, URI graduating with a degree in Criminology, FBI school for firearms instructors and FBI Command and Staff School.
He is survived by his loving daughter Janice D. Mele, Chairwoman of the Johnston School Committee, his cherished grandchildren Alicia and Amanda, great grandchildren, Olyvia, Landon and Ella Jay, his dear siblings, Ernest Acciardo, Raymond Acciardo, Virginia Salzillo, Rose Grasso and Anna Corrente all of Johnston. He was also the father in-law of the late John "Jay" Mele and brother of the late Carlo, Louis, Pasco, Albert, Ralph, Thomas and Angelo Acciardo.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11 am in St. Thomas Church, Providence followed by burial with military honors in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
