Virginia L. (Thompson) Newby

74, formerly of Tulsa, OK and El Dorado, KS, died peacefully September 26, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, wife, cousin, mentor and friend, Virginia was fittingly born on February 14, 1942. She graduated from El Dorado High School and studied at Butler Community College before marrying William Thomas Newby (1936-1982) with whom she moved to Tulsa, OK, where she made her home for 40 years before relocating to Providence to enjoy her role as her granddaughters’ cherished “Gigi” full time in 2006.

She will be dearly missed by the many to whom she was an unfailingly generous and loving friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Lois Thompson, brother Paul Thompson, and husband Tom Newby. She is survived by daughters Lisa Newby and Nicole Newby Crossley; granddaughters Elizabeth and Louisa Crossley, all of Providence; sister Linda Thompson Bernhardt, of McMinnville, TN; and many and nephews and nieces.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2016 at Central Congregational Church, 296 Angell St., Providence, RI 02906.
