Alfred A. Russo, Sr.

June 4, 1932 ~ March 30, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old


He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley (Mulholland) Russo.  Born in Johnston, RI he was the son of the late Vincent and Alvina (Cantone) Russo.  Alfred was the proud owner and President of Russo Brothers Construction, where he was a heavy equipment operator and exemplified his strong work ethic and dedication to numerous construction projects.

Alfred was the loving father of Alfred A., Jr. and his wife Jennifer and a strong role model to his grandson Michael and granddaughter Julia.  He was also a loving father to his late son David V. and his wife Lisa and loved his granddaughters Annisiah and Alexia.  He took great pride in teaching his grandchildren the right way to water the garden and pick the vegetables, including their pumpkins.

He played golf with Alfred and Bocce with David and served as a proud President of the RI Bocce League and captain of the team Russo Brothers for over 40 years.  Upon retirement, his vegetable garden multiplied and he took up cooking so he could feed his family and friends with the fruit of his labor.

Alfred was the dear brother of Madelyn Travelyn, Ida Acciardo, and Elizabeth Fluery all of Johnston, and the late Vincent Russo, Mary Paiva, Florence Centofante, Ann Chirichella, for all of whom he felt such great pride and joy.  He was such a great uncle to his 16 nieces and nephews.

Alfred is a proud Korea War Veteran serving in combat from 1952 through 1954 and he received the Combat Infantry Badge.  During this heroic time, he met his lifelong friend and confidant, the late Jack Newsham and later his wife Pat.  The families will forever be bonded as Alfred will be laid to rest at the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery alongside his devoted wife and loyal friend Jack.

Funeral from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston on Monday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Rocco’s Church, Johnston.  Burial with Military Honors will take place in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.  VISITING HOURS are Sunday 4 – 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Rocco’s School, 931 Atwood Ave., Johnston, RI 02919 or to the Providence VA Medical Center, 830 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, RI 02908.
