John J. Fontes, Jr.

83, of Johnston, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence.  He was the beloved husband of the late Dolores B. (Ottiano) Fontes. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John J. Fontes, Sr. and Phoebe (Mosca) Fontes. John was a crane operator for Local 57 Engineers, for many years before retiring and also served with the RI National Guard. His generosity was second to none.  He gave to several charities on a regular basis.

John is survived by his loving children, Sandra Verdecchia and her husband Steven of Johnston, and Joseph Pupella and his wife Gina of Warwick.  He was the cherished grandfather of Kristin and Kerri Verdecchia, Joli Pinental, and Joseph J. Pupella.  John was the great grandfather of five. He was the dear brother of Rosemarie Peters of Riverside and leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held from the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston on Wednesday, January 19th at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bartholomew's Church, Laurel Hill Avenue, Providence at 11 a.m. Visiting hours are on Wednesday MORNING from 9-10 a.m.  MASKS ARE REQUIRED. Burial will take place in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
