Madeline (Bailey) Muto Jones

Madeline Muto Jones, 104, a long time resident of Johnston, peacefully passed into heaven on February 8, 2024 after a long and fulfilling life. She was a devoted mother to Patricia Lupoli, Pamela Borges, and stepmother to Barbara (Jones) McCann.
She was the former wife of the late Armando Muto for 40 years and the late Ennis Jones for 19 years.
Madeline was born January 4, 1920, the daughter of the late Irene (Kanto), and the late Charles William Bailey and the sister of the late Melvin Bailey. She grew up in Long Island, NY during the Great Depression and as a youngster worked hard to support her family, which instilled that determined, “Get up and go” mentality that Madeline sustained throughout her lifetime.

After graduating high school, Madeline worked her way through nursing school and graduated from Long Island College Hospital as a registered nurse. She migrated to Rhode Island accepting a job as head nurse of communicable diseases at Chapin Hospital. A fellow colleague talked her into going on a blind date during which she met her first husband, Armando. She married him (1943) and a year later gave birth to Patricia. Madeline continued her nursing part-time until she gave birth to her second daughter, Pamela. She worked part-time district nursing for the town of Johnston along with part-time private duty nursing.

In 1957 she became a full-time school nurse teacher for the Johnston School Department. Madeline’s thirst for knowledge over the years landed her at Rhode Island College earning several degrees... Bachelor of Science, Masters of Education, and Certificate of Graduate Studies in Administration. During her employment with the Johnston School Department her degrees advanced her to positions of Guidance Counselor and Assistant Superintendent (the first female to hold that position). Madeline retired in 1986 after 30 years of service.

Time to unwind? Not Madeline! She became active in square dancing, three retired teacher organizations, church religious instruction, and the local United Commercial Travelers Organization in which she moved up the ranks to the position of Senior Counselor (the first female to hold that position). And it was in this latter organization where she met her second husband, Ennis.

For Madeline, there was no role that she took more seriously than being a loving, and supportive mom, grandma and great-grandma. Always giving of herself to lighten the burden for her daughters and son-in-laws, Bernie Lupoli and George Borges. Always energized to listen and offer advice to her four grandsons and wives, Eric & Gloria Lupoli, Scott & Nikki Borges, Matthew Borges and Jason & Tammy Lupoli. And her great-grandchildren, Ryan Borges, Valerie Borges, Jack Borges, Bella Lupoli, Gavin Lupoli, and Camden Lupoli relished the life stories shared by their great-grandma, Madeline.

Madeline was a devout catholic, being one of the first parishioners of St. Robert Bellarmine Church, where she was active in supporting all parish activities until her declining health.
Madeline resided at The Lighthouse at Lincoln for a short period of time before passing. She always looked forward to engaging in their expressive art activities.

Our family thanks the caring and devoted staff who assisted her and provided her a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We especially want to thank the Hope Health Hospice staff for the exceptional care they provided for our mom during her end of life journey.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 16, 2024 in St. Robert Bellarmine Church at 11am.  Inurnment to follow will be Private.
